Antigua

I tried to take the group from Pana to Antigua via back roads, but with the recent activities in Pana, the police had blocked all the roads except for the one we had used when coming to Pana. A short 40 to 50 miles later and we where in Antigua.
Even though a few in the group were still having stomach problems, we all took off for Rileys, the Irish bar in Antigua. After a few drinks, Arno jumped onto the bar at the first opportunity to compete in an air guitar competition.
Several people told us that the highlight of their stay in Antigua was to climb the active volcano, Pacaya, and stand next to the lava and roast a marshmallow. We picked the “night” hike that left Antigua at 2:00 PM and returned 4 to 4.5 hours later. After an hour bus ride, we arrived at what I called the stampede. “Taxis” or kids riding horses continued to ask if we wanted a taxi up the volcano. The worst part was that you are hiking a steep grade - at altitude - and soon you’re gasping for air, which has tons of dust from the horses...not to mention the smell.
It was all worth it. Standing next to lava, walking over lava, cooking marshmallows over lava was really great. Can’t do this back home!
Before you know it, the guide is saying it’s time to leave. Looking around, you realize it’s really dark. The remainder of the trip was spent hiking or falling down the volcano with flashlights (those that had them). No taxis this time!
If you go to Antigua, take the night hike up Pacaya!
