Bikeless in Buenos Aires
Sunday, 25 April 2010 00:00
Last week, in preparation for shipping to the USA, I took the Beast in for a bath. It had 3 months of South American dirt and mud on it which the US customs doesn’t really like. The carwash down the street from DakarMotos does a great job. For $7 you get a guy who spends about 45 minutes on the bike and it comes out spotless.
I got the bike back just in time because later that night it dumped hardball sized hail for about 10 minutes. The next day there was a line around the block of the local car windshield shop with cars like this
.
During the week, I did a mini-maintenance on the Beast, replacing the fuel filter (the spare I carried), cleaning the air filter, checking nuts and bolts, etc. in preparation for the ride across the USA. This Thursday, I took the Beast out for one last spirited ride through downtown Buenos Aires as I rode to the airport cargo terminal. The whole shipping process was arranged by DakarMotos and was extremely easy.
The Beast was put on a crate after the battery was disconnected and the air removed from the tires.
After strapping it down and added the luggage the whole bike is wrapped in plastic.
Jeremy, who is staying at the DakarMotos Hotel too, brought his F800GS down with me. It goes to Canada.
After a little paper work with customs, the Beast is left at the airport and I head to downtown Buenos Aires – bikeless. The next day we will go and pay for the air cargo and then the bike is off to Atlanta while I wait for my Monday flight.
