Ushuaia

To back up a bit in the trip, I left Torres del Paine last Friday with the plan to ride to Punta Arenas and catch the once-a-day morning ferry to Tierra Del Fuego. About half way to Punta Arenas, I realized I could head to the north ferry crossing at Punta Delgada, which runs every 30 minutes, and get to Ushuaia a day earlier.
From the ferry, it’s a short ride to Cero Sombrero, which has a hostel used by riders coming and going to Ushuaia. Cero Sombrero is a small “oil” town and there are many dorm style buildings where the workers live. There is one hotel, one hostel, and 2 restaurants. Oh, and a gas station. Not much, but the hostel served its purpose, and there was another biker from Brazil spending the night and riding a R100GS.
We both woke early the next morning to beautiful blue skies, but had decided to take different roads south. We said goodbye and I rode off to find Y79, which I had heard is less traveled than I257 (ruta 3). It turned out to be a great road with almost no traffic.
I did run into some mud from the rain the day before.
The road was a little slippery in places, but I just took it slow and made it without any problems. There was no wind which was a blessing. Take a look at these trees; there was no wind when I took the picture.
But, I still stopped at the roadside shrines to help my odds.
I guess they still allow smoking in public places.
Ruta 3
About 50 miles north of Ushuaia, I saw Oliver standing on the side of the road with his rear tire. That's Oliver holding his pannier after getting his rear tire patched. The guy in the T-shirt is the truck driver who gave him a lift back to the bike. Oliver has been traveling for 11 months from Alaska to Ushuaia.
From there it was a quick ride into Ushuaia with only a bit of rain in the Paso Garibaldi.
The old road to Paso Garibaldi.
The next day it was off for a picture of “The Sign”
On the way back Oliver and I stopped for a few of the sights of the Tierra Del Fuego park.
The Beast even wanted to get a view.
We stopped to watch some kids race go-carts
Then it was off to the pubs for a bit of celebration.
OK, now where do I go?
