Don’t forget yourself

I’ve spent about two years preparing for my motorcycle trip to South America. First, I purchased my BMW 1150 GS. Then, I started customizing it to my liking. I’ve read ride reports on ADVRider and Horizons Unlimited, purchased paper maps, found GPS based maps of South America, the basic stuff one would do when planning such a trip.

Then, about 3 weeks before my intended departure, a tooth started  getting sensitive. I’m thinking, OK, this should go away in a day or so.  Nope, several days later and there is definitely something not right in my mouth.  Turns out I have a tooth that is starting to crack and I need a crown.

A dentist visit should have been one of the activities in preparing myself for this motorcycle trip (I don’t really like the whole dentist thing). Had I taken the same precautions with myself, as I have with my BMW, then I would not be spending three days in the chair.

Prepare Yourself:

  • Medical Checkup (Great time to start talking about the Meds you should be taking on the trip)
  • Dentist Checkup
  • Exercise – strength and endurance

  • Mike M.  - I recommend a gold crown

Gold crowns are useful for barter when you run out of money on an extended trip (just kidding). Actually, gold crowns are more durable than the white ones. You probably don't want crowns falling apart in a remote place even though dental work tends to be high quality at a low price in many S. American countries.

  • Steve H  - Exercise??

Hmmm... I can see you doing the meds and dental thing , but exercise?????? :)

As a Dental Tech, Gold crowns are great!
They swedge on well if the impression wasn't done well and very few people react to them.
Mike is right, they are very durable in general.
